The 17th BRICS Summit, held on July 6–7, 2025 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, marks a significant milestone in the evolution of the bloc. Under Brazil’s year-long Pro Tempore Presidency, the summit adopted the theme:
“Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance.”

- Promotion of equitable access to medicines and vaccines
- Launch of the BRICS Partnership for the Elimination of Socially Determined Diseases, focusing on neglected tropical ailments

- Deepening economic integration, exploring settlement in local currencies
- Discussion on alternative payment mechanisms and financial market reforms
- Climate Change & Sustainable Finance
- Adoption of the BRICS Climate Leadership Agenda and a framework on climate finance
- Commitment to equitable energy transition and climate action via the Rio de Janeiro Declaration
- AI Governance
- A joint declaration emphasizing the need for inclusive, human-rights-oriented global standards in AI
- Emphasis on the U.N. leading frameworks that prevent the tech gap from widening
- Security & Global Governance Reform
- Advocating reforms in the multilateral peace and security setup
- Enhanced language on Middle Eastern conflicts and criticism of unilateral trade measures
- Institutional Development of BRICS
- Strengthening internal coordination within the rapidly expanding bloc
- Adoption of the Rio de Janeiro Declaration with 126 commitments, including endorsement of India’s chairmanship for the 2026 Summit and future agenda-setting roles
